Gus graduated with an LL.B (Hons.) from the University of Wales (UWIST) in 1983. He was called to the English Bar in 1985 and was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 1986.
As a member of the team from Haridass Ho & Partners who assisted the Temasek Polytechnic to introduce subject of admiralty to their diploma course for para-legals, he organised the course in Admiralty, delivered lectures, conducted tutorials, and set the examination papers and marking schemes for the course from 1996 to 1997. In 2004, Gus lectured at the Nanyang Executive Program on Shipping Management organised by the Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) on the subjects of maritime liens, salvage, general average, ship arrest, limitation of liability and liability regimes for cargo claims. Gus was a Guest Lecturer in the National Technological University MS/c Degree Course for the Shipping Management Modules I and II in the years 2004 and 2005 and lectured on the subjects of Admiralty Jurisdiction and Sovereign Immunity, Ship Registration, Limitation of Liability, Marine Insurance and Oil Pollution. He was also a trainer at the Wavelink Academy which is founded by the NTUC and SMOU. He has delivered papers at various MARTECH events, the Asia Business Law Forum Conferences, Thai Shipping Association Conferences and various in-house seminars for various shipowners. Until year 2015, he tutored the Admiralty subject in the Practice Law Course of the Singapore Institute of Legal Education. In 2018 he taught the marine insurance subject of the Shipping Specialist Accreditation Course organised by the Singapore Academy of Law and together with a co-tutor set the examination paper and marked the exam paper.
Gus is primarily a litigator concentrating his practice mainly in admiralty including ship arrests, casualties, fires, groundings, collisions, salvage, general average, towage, cargo claims, personal injury claims, crew and wages disputes, shipmanagement disputes and bunker disputes. He has handled oil shortage and contamination disputes as well and generally disputes in the oil and gas sector. In addition, he handles some non-marine insurance matters.
